Parenting and More Hofstede’s concepts

Hello my dear amigo(a), How are you? We are in the last weeks of the exchange which makes me very sad, even though I’m staying another semester it’s sad to say goodbye to this amazing group, the next group won’t feel the same :(

Okay… let’s talk about the last class; we discussed about parenting and Hofstede’s Indulgence and restrained societies. First I’ll talk about parenting, we discussed about many topics, firstable was what time do little kids should go to sleep and actually most of us agreed on the time (9pm) even the japanese students agreed, I think it’s a good time to sleep, specially because in Mexico school is so early, it starts at 7am the first class so we have to sleep early in order to arrive on time with breakfast and shower. Then we talked about what age we stopped sleeping next to our parents, the answers here were very different and interesting, while many friends said like me (sleeping in the first months or years when we are babies) other friends stopped sleeping with their parents at 6-8 or even at 12 in their puberty years, I personally find it a little bit extreme because I think kids should learn to be alone in a room and face the fear, I mean I have an older brother and after 2-3yo I used to sleep with him in the same room and after 9yo we got separated rooms. Finally in this topic we talked about which were our happiest years, it was interesting for me that japanese students mentioned that their happiest years were in junior high, because for most of us in the West we tend to love childhood like nothing else, maybe it’s because japanese childhood is very strict? I don’t know, personally it was my happiest moment in life, I had some friends but I really didn’t care about my social life in school because I have a big family so the best plans were with my cousins.

About Hofstede’s Indulgent and restrained societies, Indulgent refers to these type of societies that prioritize pleasure and happiness and restrained refers to societies that think more about the future and long term gratification, I found not surprising that Mexico and US are very indulgent societies because to be honest we don’t have enough education to think about the future and the long term gratification, we just think about the present and what can we do right now to feel better without thinking about the consequences, which is sad because every day we see families regreting these decisions. And also is not surprising that most developed and advanced countries are the restrained ones like Japan or north european countries, of course they’re not perfect but we should learn about them a little more, I think…

  2. It's great that you'll stay for another semester in Japan! I hope you can also find buddies in the next group! I like your point that kids should learn to face the fear and darkness on their own at an early age. I think that means a lot to their personal developments.
